Police actions injured dozens mourners, 200 arrested

Srinagar, December 4, 2011:  Scores of mourners were injured and more than 200 including Hurriyet leaders, Masroor Abass and Nisar Ahmad Rather were arrested when Indian police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel resorted to brute force and lobbed teargas shells to prevent them from taking out 8th Muharram processions In Sriangar. The authorities had imposed restrictions in the city to prevent the Muharram procession on Sunday December 4, 2011.

FCC condemns beating of journalists, demand probe

New Delhi, November 30, 2011: In New Delhi, the Foreign Correspondents' Club (FCC) of South Asia has demanded a thorough investigation into the injuries suffered by Associated Press (AP) cameraman Umar Meraj while covering protests in Srinagar on November 25. The Club mentioned that previous appeals to investigate similar incidents involving photojournalists from Agence France Press (AFP) have gone unanswered.

The FCC urged for a thorough probe into the affair, and to take necessary actions to protect journalists covering events in Kashmir.

CPJ calls for probe into attack on Kashmir journalists

Srinagar, November 30, 2011: The Committee to Protect Journalists has called for an investigation into the November 25 attack on four journalists reporting on a protest in Srinagar on Friday November 25.

The journalists-- AP Television News cameraman Umar Meraj, Al-Jazeera English online contributor Showkat Shafi, Getty Images photojournalist Yawar Kabli, and photojournalist Shahid Tantray for the Hindi-language daily Dainik Bhaskar--were covering a protest in the city of Srinagar when they were assaulted by paramilitary forces and the police.

International Federation of Journalists concern over attacks on journalists in Kashmir

Srinagar,  November 29: The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) joins partner organisations in the South Asia Media Solidarity Network (SAMSN) has expressed serious concern over the attacks on news photographers reporting protests in Srinagar on November 25.

Over 50 protesters arrested since Friday protests in Kashmir

Srinagar,  November 29, 2011:  Over 50 people, including 21 minors, have been arrested by police since Friday for taking part in protests, a senior police officer said, claiming the crackdown against stone-throwers would continue. Among those detained were three children aged between nine and 12 years picked up by police.

Protests had erupted in different parts of Srinagar on Friday against the continued detention of political prisoners and minors.

Journalists covering protests beaten, detained in Kashmir

Srinagar, Friday, 25 November 2011: Three journalists including An Associated Press cameraman were thrashed by police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel and another was detained while covering protests in the Srinagar city, today.

Shahid Tantray, a photojournalist working for Dainik Bhaskar, was arrested at Nowhatta police station while he was covering a protest in the old city.

Nowhatta police station SHO Iqbal Shah confirmed Tantray was detained during protests.

91 Civilians killed, 494 Injured in police firing in Kashmir 2010

New Delhi, Nov 23, 2011: Ninety-one civilians were killed and 494 others were injured in police firing in Jammu and Kashmir in 2010, the Indian Rajya Sabha was informed on Wednesday.

14,231 custodial deaths from 2001 to 2010 in India and Kashmir: ACHR

New Delhi, November 21, 2011 : In New Delhi, the Asian Centre for Human Rights(ACHR), in a report said that 14,231 persons had been killed in custody in India from 2001 to 2010. The report pointed out that custodial rape remains one of the worst forms of torture perpetrated on women by law enforcement personnel in India.

Kashmir family of Handwara demands justice

Srinagar, November 18, 2011: a widow, Taja Begum of Warpora in Handawara -Tehsil of Kupwara district whose husband was killed due to third degree torture in custody by the Indian troops in 1992, is waiting for justice for the past 16-years.
 The life took an ugly turn for Taja when Border Security Force (BSF) troopers of Maghwa camp arrested her husband, Muhammad Ramzan, on January 22, 1992, she reveals.
