Religo-Political leaders arrested in Kashmir valley IIOJK

Srinagar, September 18: Two days after noted religious clerics, Moulana Abdul Rasheed Dawoodi, Mushtaq Ahmad Veeri  and several Jamaat-e-Islami leaders were booked under black law, Public Safety AcT, now another popular religious preacher Sarjan Barkati has been arrested in Shopian district.

One of the family members of Barkati told the news agency  that he was arrested by police on Saturday morning.
He said that since he was released, he hasn’t taken part in protests, hasn’t delivered any speech and they are unable to understand why he has been arrested now. Notably, Barkati was released after four years of detention in October 2020 after he was arrested during the uprising  in 2016.
The authorities are tight-lipped about the reasons for the arrests. Under the black law public safety act (PSA), the authorities have the henious power to put a person behind bars without any reason and trial for up to two years.
The family members of the detained persons said that they may have been shifted to Kot Balwal jail in Jammu. Of the five  members of  Jamaat-e-Islami who have been arrested, two are Faheem Mohammad Ramzan and Gazi Moin-ul-Islam Nadvi, people close to both families, who did not wish to be named, said.
A call to the spokesperson of JeI, advocate Zahid Ali, was picked up by a family member who said that he had also been arrested. “Yesterday police came and asked him to come to the police station. He has been arrested and has not returned home,” a family member said.
In February 2019, the Indian authorities arrested hundreds of its members on the grounds that they are damanding right to self determination and affiliated with the freedom movement” inJammu and Kashmir .
The arrests triggered  condemnations including from CPIM leader and spokesperson of the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD), MY Tarigami.
“There are reports about the detention of three well-known religious clerics. The move is rather deplorable and bound to deepen the uncertainty further,” said Tarigami in a tweet.
People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti in a tweet said it reflects ‘BJP’s communal mindset.’
“If normalcy as claimed by GOI has indeed returned to J&K with zero incidents of stone pelting & other activities considered anti-India, why are they booking religious scholars under draconian laws like PSA? Outrightly condemn such actions that reflect BJPs communal mindset,” she said in a tweet.
Meanwhile, Indian police during cordon and search operation arrested Waseem Akram, Yawar Reyaz, and Muzamil Sheikh in Sadunara Hajin area of the Bandipore district.
