Srinagar, 2 Aug 2014: A doctors' group in Jammu and Kashmir Saturday has said the police of thrashing a senior doctor while he was on his way to a hospital as restrictions were imposed in Kashmir amid a shutdown.

Dr Reyaz, a senior resident in medicine, at around 9.30 am while on his way to Soura Institute of Medical Sciences for emergency duty was stopped by a police at Noor Bagh in Srinagar and was not allowed to go further.

He said “this unruly behavior by police and use of coercion on a senior medico is brutal”. “This highhandedness of police against the doctor and depriving sick patients of medicare services is barbaric,” he said.
This contumacious attitude of police has become a norm as in the past also they have not allowed doctors to discharge their professional duties, he added.     “Doctors in Kashmir are in a state of constant fear because police has unleashed a reign of terror against them. This insecurity has forced many good doctors to leave the valley as a result of which there is brain drain,” Dr Hassan claimed. He demanded stern action against erring policeman.  A senior police officer told Kashmir Dispatch that they were investigating the incident.
