Muslim student thrashed for wearing skull cap in Karnataka

 Bagalkot,May 29: An FIR has been lodged against seven people, including principal, sub inspectors and five others in connection with  thrashing of a student for wearing a skull cap on the premises of a college in Indian state Karnataka, police said on Sunday.The case has been filed as per the directions of the local Banahatti JMFC court by Teradala police station in Bagalkot district of the state.Naveed Hasan Saab Tharathari, a college student, had submitted a petition in the court in this regard.

 
In his petition, Naveed had said that on February 18, when he came to the Government First Grade College of Teradal wearing a skull cap, he was insulted and prevented from entering the institution, “belittling” his religious sentiments.
 
He had prayed before the court to lodge complaint against the Principal and police sub-inspector who boycotted him from the college, “insulting” his religion.
 
Considering the petition, the court had ordered the police to lodge an FIR against the accused.
 
The court will take up the case for hearing on June 30. Jamakhandi Deputy SP has been made investigator of the case.
 
Hijab-clad college students in Karnataka sent back

Dakshina Kannada (Karnataka) : Following a statement by Karnataka Education Minister B.C. Nagesh that only uniforms are permissible inside classrooms, authorities at a college in Dakshina Kannada district on Saturday sent back hijab-clad students home.
 
The incident took place in Mangaluru’s University College.
The college had banned the wearing of hijab as per the decision of it syndicate.
 
Though majority of the Muslim students attended classes on Saturday without hijab, 12 students came in wearing them.
 
They insisted on allowing them to attend classes with hijab.
 
However, the college principal stopped them from attending classes and were also denied permission to go to the library, after which the students returned home.
 
As the hijab row is resurfacing in the district, the College Development Committee has decided to allow students to take it off in rest rooms and then attend classes.— IANS
 
Karnataka: Communal tension rises amid hijab, Malali mosque rows

Bengaluru ,May 29, 2022: Communal tension in coastal Karnataka region comprising Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada and Udupi is on a rise with the resurfacing of hijab controversy and the Malali mosque row.
 
The coastal region of the state is considered to be communally sensitive and bastion of BJP. The region is prone to communal tensions and clashes. The hijab crisis which snowballed into an international issue started from Bengaluru.
 
When things seemed to have settled down, the communal strife raised its ugly head again in the region with the Hindu students launching a protest against wearing of hijab in classrooms as classes in schools and colleges resumed after summer holidays.
 
The ruling BJP government has stressed that only uniforms are allowed in the campus. Following the protest in University College of Mangaluru, BJP MLA Vedavyasa Kamat is holding a meeting with College Development and Management Committee members and students. Mangaluru University Vice-Chancellor and Registrar are also participating in the meeting.
 
Meanwhile, the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has stated that they will not let Hindu activists carry one handful of soil from Malali Masjid stirring a controversy. “Don’t dream about taking over masjid,” stated Abdul Mazeed Mysuru, the state president of SDPI on Saturday.
 
Addressing a rally at Mangaluru, Mazeed challenged Hindutva terrorists including one its members of Sangh Parivar members to take traditional way of “Tambula Prashne” to ascertain on destroying of 200 years old Suggalamma temple in Ballary by mining baron and BJP leader Janardhana Reddy.
 
“RSS games make JD (S) and Congress parties fearful. Sangh activists who give boycott calls of businessmen, aren’t you ashamed when Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai had inked MoU with Yousuf Ali for Rs 2,000 crore?” questioned Abdul Mazeed.
 
M.A. Yusuf Ali is a UAE-based Indian businessman and billionaire. He is the chairman and managing director of LuLu Group International that owns the LuLu Hypermarket chain worldwide.
 
“The ruling BJP in the country is not “pro-people”. It is pro-industrialists Ambani and Adani. The BJP is destroying the country academically, socially and economically instead of empowering it,” he charged.
 
However, the authorities are maintaining the status quo on the Malali Masjid premises. The temple structure surfaced at the time of renovation recently. Following the development, the court had issued the status quo order. Hindu activists are claiming that they will take the legal way to reclaim this temple.
 
With the state already entering the election year, the issues are threatening to snowball into a major crisis situation in the entire region, say sources.— IANS
