Kashmir’s top cardiologist succumbs gunshot wounds

Srinagar, August 17 : Noted cardiologist of Kashmir, Dr Sheikh Jalal-ud-din, who was critically injured in an attack by unidentified gunmen last month, passed away in New Delhi, today. Dr Jalaal was critically injured when unidentified gunmen killed two police guards and he was critically injured in the incident in Pampore on July 18. 
He was first operated upon at the Soura Institute of Medical Sciences, Srinagar. He was later flown to the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi for specialized treatment on July 21.
Meanwhile, doctors in the valley have expressed grief and sorrow over the death of Dr Jalal. “It is an irreparable loss and the void created thereby can’t be fulfilled by any means. We have lost an Icon whose credentials and caliber were par excellence,” said a statement by the Field Doctors Welfare Association Kashmir. 
“Dr Jalal, who had remained in coma for 21 days, passed away around 8.30 in the morning,” said AIIMS medical superintendent Dr DK Sharma. “For more than two weeks in Delhi, He was treated by top neurosurgeons. We tried our level best to save him but couldn’t,” he added.
On July 18, Dr Jalal took bullets in the head in an attack in the outskirts of Srinagar, which left his personnel security officer dead. The militants also took away the guard’s weapons. No militant organisation claimed responsibility for the attack.
Police in Srinagar are investigating if it was an attack on his guard, given a series of recent attacks on policemen.  The immediate cause of death most likely was heart attack. news agencies
