Indian Navy harassing us: Wullar fishermen

Srinagar, Sat, 18 August 2012: Fishermen eking their livelihood by working in Wullar lake in Bandipora-Sopore has said that Indian Navy marine commandos (Marcos) of harassing them on baseless pretexts.

Thousands of villagers dwell on the banks of world famous water body and considered as Asia’s 2nd largest fresh water lake get their livelihood by fishing or by collecting water chestnuts from the lake every day.

The villagers said that Indian Navy camped at Watlab Ghat lift irrigation station on the Wullar banks was unnecessarily harassing them. “Every time we go for fishing the Indian army authorities make them register names at the camp,” a delegation of ‘Mahigir and Singhara Kasha Association,’ Bandipora led by its president Abdul Rehman Dar told Kashmir Reader

“The Indian Navy personnel also make frequent patrolling of the lake and ask for the identities of the fisherman working there,” they said.

The fisherman demanded immediate steps to prevent their harassment,. Otherwise their livelihood will be ruined, they said.
