human rights violations Srinagar, December 07, 2019: A mentally-challenged man was shot at and critically injured by Indian troops in Pulwama district.
The victim was identified as Bashir Ahmed Ganaie son of Ali Muhammad Ganaie, a resident of Frisal Yaripora area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district. The police claimed that the incident happened when Ganai was roaming in the area and came close to the wall of the high-security zone at the Awantipora Air Force Station.
“Despite repeated warnings by the BSF men guarding the station, he did not stop. The sentry fired towards him below the waist and he was wounded,” SP, Pulwama, Chandan Kohli said.
The police said the incident happened at around 6 am when Ganai was roaming in the area and came close to the perimeter wall of the high-security zone at the Awantipora Air Force Station.
The officials said that the injured person was rushed to District Hospital Pulwama where from he has been shifted to SMHS hospital in Srinagar for advanced treatment. He has received multiple shots, said a doctor at SMHS hospital in Srinagar
In past as well, such incidents have occurred in Kashmir Valley. In April 2018, Indian Army allegedly killed a mentally unsound man Rayees Ahmad Wani, son of Abdul Hamid Wani of Begam village of Kulgam district, in Pahnoo village of southern Shopian district triggering protest by the family members and relatives of the deceased.
