Especially in New Delhi, Delhi Police has launched massive crackdowns and enquiries related to Kashmiri youth, certainly making it uneasy for the youths especially thousands of Kashmiri students who study in universities in India.
An M.Tech student of Jamia Hamdard University, New Delhi, Hakim Aijaz, originally from Nowgam, Shangus, Islamabad, who was released after three days of his detention at Tughlaqabad police station in Delhi is petrified after days of torture and trauma he went through.
On the February 27 night, Aijaz who stays in a rented flat outside his University campus had some Kashmiri friends as guests at his place. Some men in uniform, who Aijaz’s landlord said were policemen entered into the building, and asked Aijaz and his friends to accompany them.
On the landlord’s insistence, the police assured that they would be sent back home soon. However, for three days there were no trace of Aijaz and his friends.
After the Jamia Hamdard staff and students lodged their protests and asked police to divulge the whereabouts of Aijaz and his friends, Aijaz and one of his friends were released on Thursday.
However, for three days, the nearby police station officials refused to even file the missing report of Aijaz and his friends and even denied that they were arrested.
“We made several visits to police station. The policemen said that they do not have any information regarding this incident. There was not even a report filed which raised our fears about their whereabouts,” Naima (name changed), a campus student said.
It was only after Aijaz’s family’s interfered and sought his release. Along with Aijaz, one more Kashmiri boy was released.
“Aijaz is in a state of shock right now. He does not even want to talk right now. Though we know him very well, because he is a student from our university, we have no clue of the other Kashmiri friends of his who were arrested,” Aijaz’s batch mate, Yarwar (name changed) said, report daily Kashmir times.
Pertinently, some universities in Delhi like Jamia Hamdard, Jamia Millia Islamia, Jawaharlal Nehru University and few others have a very vast proportion of Kashmiri students and due to some latest arrests being made, a fear psychosis has been created.
“At present, the campus atmosphere is really tense after Aijaz went missing. Students being picked up by the police, and then denying their arrests are a serious matter of concern. As a result, even our families back home are worried about us. We hear about these series of arrests of Kashmiri youths being made by Delhi police and then labeling them as alleged militants. We feel really threatened. Not every Kashmiri is a militant or should be eyed with suspicion. Aijaz was innocent, which was proved later on, but not without going through trauma,” Aijaz’s colleague told KTNS.
The irrational behaviour of Police and refusing to divulge the details adds more fears, according to the Kashmiri youths.
“The misbehavior of Indian Police is certainly uncalled for. We cannot put up with the humiliation we are going through. Our leaders and all civil society groups should support Kashmiri youths which they always claim to,” Zahid, an agitated Kashmiri student studying in Bangalore blogged over the issue. [Kashmir Times]
