Srinagar, August 31 2017 : Indian forces used brute force and beat up students and teachers of the Degree College in Handwara. Indian forces used fired teargas on students of the Government Degree College, Handwara, who were protesting against the killing of their fellow student Shahid Bashir Mir by the Indian forces a few days ago in custody. The protesters said the Indian forces entered the college premises and beating up several teachers and students after trying to subdue the protest by firing teargas canisters. Several girl students who fainted after inhaling teargas were taken to the sub-district hospital Handwara for treatment, the protesters said.
A delegation of teachers later went to meet the deputy commissioner of Kupwara to register their protest against the forces' action. However, they met additional deputy commissioner Muzaffar Ahmad Shah and complained against the forces.
The students were demanding an investigation into the killing of Shahid Mir, who was a second year student at the college.
Shahid Bashir Mir’s bullet-riddled body had been found in a forest on the night of August 21 and the Indian army had claimed that they had killed a militant. However, the deputy commissioner had stated that Mir had no militancy links.
On the other hand, Indian forces vandalised property, including shops and vehicles during siege search operation at Litter in Pulwama.
Meanwhile, the authorities have decided not to allow Eid-ul-Azha prayers at TRC Ground in Srinagar.
An official from the office of the District Magistrate’s office said “in wake of the prevailing situation, Eid-ul-Azha congregational prayers will not be allowed at TRC Ground Srinagar”. He said that a formal order has been issued in this regard to concerned police station.
