Body recovered in Kulgam, Naidkhai town staged massive protests

Srinagar, December 31, 2011: Body of Mohammad Ishaq Wani son of Mohammad Yousuf resident of Nillow, Kulgam was recovered from village Pumbay, falling under the jurisdiction of Police Station Damhal Hanjipora, Kulgam in suspicious circumstance, said a police spokesman.
The body of the deceased was handed over to legal heirs for last rites. Police has registered a case and has taken up investigations, the spokesman added. The youth is reportedly to be missing.
Meawhile, residents of Naidkhai town staged massive anti-forces protests. Demonstrations brought normal life to a grinding halt and traffic also remained disrupted.   Protesters said that personnel of 14th Indian Reserve Police (IRP) Battalion are setting up their camp at a vast piece of land donated by the administration to construct a 200-bed hospital in the area.
The IRP, according to the residents, had set up a temporary tin shed on the land five years ago. “They had assured us that the shed will be removed at an appropriate time, but they (IRP) on Friday night erected tin sheets and have started constructing a building inside,” Ghulam Muhammad Hurra, Sapanch Halqa Naidkhi A, told Greater Kashmir.
“We fail to understand the logic behind setting up this camp in the village,” said a protester. “Our village is already bound by several Indian army camps and there is no need to set up another in the village.”
Locals said that the High Court had already issued a stay order to stop the construction on the land.
“Despite High Court orders IRP is carrying on the construction during night. If police doesn’t stop the construction we will launch an agitation,” they said.
Locals said that a sector headquarters of Rashtriya Rifles and Indian army’s Brigade headquarters are just 7 kms from the village. “An army camp is located just 5 km away at Haretar village while another camp is 3.5 km away at Hajin. In Sumbal, just 3 km from Naidkhai, another army camp already exists,” they added.
