Srinagar, January 13, 2017: more than 7000 youth were detained from July to October last year, police officials said. A senior police officer in a media interview in Srinagar admitted that over 7000 youth were detained from July 8 to October 31, 2016.
He said in Srinagar district, majority of youth were detained on charges of stone-pelting and participating in pro freedom protests following the killing of prominent young leader of Kashmir Burhan Wani on July 8 last year.
As per the rough estimates, more than 436 youth were detained from Srinagar district alone.
In South Kashmir districts, many elderly people including religious scholars and leaders of Hurriyat were booked under draconian act Public Safety Act.
